At Swoon Soiree, we aren’t just wedding planners. We are event artists and designers, constantly on the lookout for venues that blend history, atmosphere, and exceptional service. Lowndes Grove in Charleston meets our every qualification. This venue sits along the Ashley River in a way that feels quietly transportive. It captures that distinct Charleston atmosphere that has made the city such a sought-after destination, without feeling overly curated or expected. The live oaks, the river, and the historic home all unfold with a sense of ease that feels both romantic and elevated.

An Iconic Charleston Wedding Venue
When we imagine a wedding in Charleston, we often picture the historic charm of Lowndes Grove. The aesthetic leans coastal Southern estate, but in a way that feels refined rather than themed. It’s clean, intentional, and highly responsive to light, especially in the late afternoon and into sunset. A wedding here gives you everything Charleston has to offer: Panoramic river views, a grand historic mansion with original details from 1786, and the famous live oaks layered with Spanish Moss.
Everything about Lowndes Grove is layered, atmospheric, and cinematic. When attending a wedding here, guests can move through the evening naturally, discovering moments rather than being directed through them. The venue strikes that balance between charm and restraint, while still leaving space for something more editorial, personal, and unexpected.
The palette tends to stay soft unless you choose to push against it. That contrast is when it becomes particularly compelling. It can remain tonal and restrained, or act as a backdrop for something sharper and more editorial. As designers, we consider these options early in the planning process so you can create a one-of-a-kind experience for your guests.
But beyond the aesthetic, Lowndes Grove functions exceptionally well. The layout is intuitive. The transitions feel seamless. And the property supports a level of control that allows for a highly considered, well-executed event. If you want your wedding to feel grounded in a sense of time and place, yet still personal, you will love the strong architectural foundation this venue gives you. Here, Charleston can be part of your celebration rather than just the backdrop. It also provides the freedom to layer thoughtful details and customize your experience. You can work within the existing structure or expand with a custom tent on the lawn. The venue provides flow and atmosphere while allowing you to orchestrate an unforgettable guest experience.

Envision a Seamless Celebration at Lowndes Grove
Few venues offer such flexible and intuitive layouts. Every space feels cohesive and intentional, which makes transitions feel effortless. As event designers, we take the strong existing structure and shape how the experience unfolds.
Getting Ready
One of the details that often gets overlooked when choosing a wedding venue is the getting-ready experience itself. At Lowndes Grove, the suites on the second floor of the historic house feel connected to the rest of the property rather than like an afterthought.
The natural light, architectural details, and overall atmosphere photograph beautifully. But more importantly, the spaces allow the beginning of the day to feel calm, cohesive, and aligned with the overall experience you are creating for your guests.
Ceremony on the Waterfront Lawn with Live Oak Trees
The ceremony typically sits under the iconic oak tree along the river, creating a sense of scale and framing that feels both natural and intentional. It offers a strong architectural moment that can be enhanced in a variety of ways, depending on how you choose to design it. We make decisions like these early in the planning process so we are prepared for everything.
Cocktail Hour in the Piazza and Portico
Cocktail hour flows easily along the waterfront, the piazza, or wrapping the house, allowing guests to move without disruption. The piazza and portico are some of the most charming and versatile spaces on the property. The glass-enclosed portico brings in natural light and structure, while the piazza overlooking the river lends itself beautifully to cocktail hour, portrait moments, or curated activations like a signature bar or portrait studio.
The Tented Reception Space & Lawn Expansion
The reception is often held under the existing tent, which connects directly to the main house for seamless service and flow. For larger or more design-forward events, the adjacent lawn allows for an expanded or fully custom tented installation, creating opportunities for a more immersive reception experience while maintaining proximity and ease.
The Private Dock
The 700-foot dock offers a completely different perspective of the property without requiring a full transition. It’s ideal for sunset moments, portraits, or a subtle shift in experience that feels intentional but effortless. If you are envisioning a grand exit, this is the perfect opportunity. Have a boat pull up for your guests to see you off. We don’t recommend a boat for an arrival simply because you have put so much time and effort into your look, and we don’t want the sea breeze to ruin any hair or makeup.

Things to Consider While Planning a Wedding at Lowndes Grove
Weddings at Lowndes Grove feel effortless, but that is only because they have been deliberately planned. You must work with a planner to host a wedding at this venue. This guarantees the level of coordination that creates these unforgettable experiences and ensures you can be fully present throughout your entire celebration. As your planners, we anticipate needs before they arise, like instituting weather plans. The tent, portico, piazza, and interior spaces are cohesive, which allows us to easily shift plans. The key is designing this in advance, not reacting to it.
Unlike many venues with this level of hospitality, Lowndes Grove can host events with up to 300 guests. With a large guest count, the layout, pacing, spatial planning, and transportation planning are critical. While there is on-site parking, many couples opt for curated guest transport. Services like Lowcountry Valet offer pastel-toned buses that feel aligned with the setting while keeping timing controlled.
Catering and bar service are handled in-house through Patrick Properties Hospitality Group. The experience is elevated and highly customizable, with a focus on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and thoughtful menu development. Private tastings allow you to refine the experience in a way that aligns with the overall vision.
