A Fine Art Wedding Venue in Washington, DC

For a wedding venue that combines elegance, history, and a touch of art,  the Anderson House in Washington, DC may. be your venue. Completed in the spring of 1905, this mansion was designed as a winter residence for Larz Anderson and his wife, Isabel. Known as a “Florentine villa in the midst of American independence,” the Anderson House quickly became one of DC’s most fashionable residences. It was more than just a home; it was a showcase for the Andersons’ extensive art collection and a venue for high-society events.

Larz Anderson was a prominent diplomat and socialite. His grand parties helped cement his status in DC society. Upon his passing, the Anderson House was gifted to the Society of the Cincinnati, a patriotic organization he was deeply involved with. Now a National Historic Landmark, the house has been open to the public for over a century.

Venue Spaces and Features

The Anderson House offers a variety of stunning spaces for events, from grand celebrations to intimate gatherings:

The Ballroom: This elegant space can comfortably seat up to 130 guests for a dinner and dance. It features a floating staircase, spiral marble columns, and a musician’s balcony, providing a perfect setting for weddings or any large gathering. The layout also makes it ideal for micro-weddings, offering a cozy yet grand atmosphere.

The Winter Garden: Adjacent to the ballroom, the Winter Garden is a personal favorite. With its marble floor and gilded mirrors, this space is perfect for elopements, intimate ceremonies, or additional dining space. The garden’s large windows and doors open onto the Hoyt Gardens, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor experience. The meticulously manicured gardens, stone terraces, sculptures, and reflecting pool offer a serene and picturesque setting—almost like stepping into a European courtyard.

Hoyt Gardens: Many couples choose to host their cocktail hour here. With green and white striped awnings and an iconic garden layout, it’s an oasis in the city. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the Olmsted Gallery inside is a great alternative for cocktails or even an intimate ceremony.

Olmsted Gallery: This gallery, located on the second floor, is adorned with larger works of art, including sixteenth-century Flemish tapestries. Originally a passageway for guests, it now offers a unique and elegant space for gatherings.

Accessibility and Amenities

The Anderson House is wheelchair accessible and conveniently located near the Dupont Circle Metro station (Red line). For guests driving in, there are four hotels within a block that offer public parking. However, given the residential nature of the area, it is required to provide transportation for your guests or suggest ride-sharing options.

For history buffs, the venue offers the option to have a museum docent present during events. They can provide tours and answer questions about the house’s art collection, adding an educational and engaging element to your event.

This venue’s combination of historical significance, artistic beauty, and elegant spaces makes it one of my favorite locations in Washington, DC, for weddings and other special events.
