For us, wedding planning is about more than designing an event. It’s about the relationships we form and the individual couples who trust us with their wedding day vision. Michelle and Michael’s wedding at Dover Hall was especially meaningful, as we were part of their proposal nearly a year prior.
Michael had enlisted us to help him plan a surprise proposal long before wedding planning started. When he came back a year later to plan the wedding itself, it changed the shape of the whole process. We weren’t meeting a couple and learning their story from scratch. We already knew it. Their wedding blended saturated color, editorial details, and a subtle Asian influence to create a bold and unexpected design that worked seamlessly within the elevated, gothic atmosphere of Dover Hall.
An Editorial Twist on an Iconic Virginia Wedding Venue
Michelle and Michael fell in love with Dover Hall after attending another wedding there. The atmosphere and architecture of this venue is one of one. While its historic character draws people in, Dover Hall also provides the modern amenities, thoughtful hospitality, and operational flexibility needed to support celebrations of this scale. As one of the premier wedding venues in Virginia, Dover Hall offered the exact balance Michelle and Michael were searching for. It has dramatic architecture, layered interiors, strong hospitality, and enough scale to support the layered celebration they envisioned.
One of the challenges of designing events at venues like Dover Hall is the propensity to repeat visual aesthetics from previous weddings. The strong architectural identity means that most weddings there lean in the same design direction – traditional, neutral, and heavily glamorous. Our goal for Michelle and Michael’s wedding was to create something unique while still respecting the architecture of the property. Rather than working against the property’s dramatic scale and layered interiors, we used them as a boundary. Color, texture, and cultural detail could be bold, but they had to hold their own against architecture that was already doing a lot of the talking.
Finding Balance Between Timeless and Editorial Design
The couple’s vision centered around creating a celebration that felt visually distinctive while remaining welcoming and comfortable for their guests. The overall palette leaned into raspberry, emerald green, layered blues, and rich purple tones. These unexpected combinations created a design direction that felt vibrant, atmospheric, and playful without losing sophistication.
As their planners, part of our job was taking the bride and groom’s individual design aesthetics and pairing them to create something cohesive. Michelle gravitated towards timeless, understated design while Michael favored a bolder, editorial style inspired by his upbringing in Asia. Much of the creative process became an exercise in deciding where to embrace contrast and where restraint would create greater impact. Rather than leaning too far in any single direction.
We understood the importance of honoring Michael’s childhood and the travels he and Michelle experienced together. Inspired by the grand floral installations often seen at weddings across Asia, we incorporated oversized silk florals into the ceremony design to create a striking focal point. Throughout the celebration, we also embraced subtle Asian influences through the paper cranes incorporated into the place cards and the paper fans that served as the escort display. These thoughtful details added texture, meaning, and personality without making the wedding feel overly thematic.
Using Texture, Lighting, and Architecture to Shape the Experience
Our design philosophy centers on creating an escape from the ordinary. With Dover Hall’s iconic architecture as the backdrop, we were determined to create an atmosphere that felt visually distinct while honoring Michelle, Michael, and their story. The couple was drawn to natural textures like bamboo and rattan, inspired by one of their favorite lounges in Japan. To bring that vision to life, we thoughtfully sourced and layered pieces that reflected the elevated, editorial aesthetic they envisioned while complementing the grandeur of the estate.
Rather than incorporating these materials throughout the entire design, we used them intentionally in moments where they would have the greatest impact. Leveraging our trusted industry partners, we sourced elevated pieces that introduced texture and warmth to the reception design and lounge styling. Paired with the floral design, layered color palette, lighting, and the existing architecture of Dover Hall, these elements created a celebration that felt deeply personal, visually distinct, and true to Michelle and Michael’s vision.
The deeper color palette created a deep and rich atmosphere without feeling overly moody. The oversized silk florals introduced sculptural form and softness, creating a striking contrast against Dover Hall’s stonework and wood interiors. At the same time, smaller details like the paper cranes, escort display fans, and natural textures woven throughout the design added personality and subtle cultural influence in a way that felt intentional instead of overly themed.
The event itself felt fluid and relaxed rather than stiff and formal. This allowed guests to experience the different layers of the property and be delighted by every new discovery. The ceremony in the gardens felt like stepping into a storybook, while the reception felt both grand and inviting. The atmosphere was driven by the environment—warm lighting, layered details, and music that filled the space without overwhelming it. The balance between whimsy, editorial influence, and timeless restraint ultimately gave the wedding a very distinct ambiance that felt personal to Michelle and Michael, both as a couple and as individuals.
